Women are more
susceptible to getting a yeast infection during pregnancy
than any other time in their life.
You should be
prepared for this common occurrence when
your pregnancy is in
the second trimester.
What is a
yeast infection:
Yeast is a normal
organism or fungus in the body. In women, there are always
certain amounts of yeast present in the vagina that keep the
environment in balance.
A yeast infection
happens when the normal yeast organisms in your body
multiply and reach high levels of overgrowth. They will not
decrease on their own, so it can be dangerous to do nothing
and wait for your body to do all the work.
Why are yeast
infections more common during pregnancy:
The chemical and
hormonal changes that happen in the 2nd trimester
cause the vagina to secrete more glucose in the normal
discharge.
The yeast needs
sugar to survive, so these secretions with high sugar levels
create an environment where they will thrive and grow out of
control.
The yeast feeds on
sugars in the body and reproduces fungi that disrupt the
normal Ph levels in the vagina.
What causes
a yeast infection:
The causes of a
yeast infection during pregnancy are mostly to do with
hormonal changes.
Your body is going
through a lot of changes, and normal pH levels are affected.
- Hormonal
chemical changes that come before your period or during
pregnancy
- Taking birth
control pills or implants, or taking
hormones
- High blood
sugar levels in diabetics
- Eating/drinking
too much sugar
- Taking steroids
or antibiotics
- Douching and
sexual intercourse

What are
yeast infection symptoms:
Common yeast
infection symptoms include a thicker, whitish discharge that
is lumpy consistency like cottage cheese.
The discharge is
accompanied by a strong odor of bread or yeast. Vaginal
discharge can also be yellow or greenish.
Itchiness around the
vagina, on the labia and a burning feeling when urinating
also occurs.
Pain during
urination and sexual intercourse varies between discomfort
and extremely painful feelings.
Other symptoms can
include:
- Rashes
- Flaking,
peeling skin
- Fatigue
- Cravings for
sweets and starches
Some
STD
’s have
vaginal discharge symptoms that are similar to a yeast
infection. Visit your doctor to test for any std’s like
Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Tricomoniasis.
A common vaginal
infection called Bacterial Vaginosis needs to be treated
differently than yeast infections.
How to prevent yeast
infections or recurring yeast infections:
A few simple
lifestyle changes can prevent most yeast
infections.
By following these
you can limit the number of times you get a yeast infection
during your pregnancy.
- Cut down on
sweets and starchy foods
- Get enough
sleep and don’t become fatigued
- Wear loose
fitting underwear and clothing
- Change out of
workout gear and swim clothes as soon as
possible
- After using the
bathroom, wipe front to back with
tissue
- Do not douche
or use deodorant suppositories
- Don’t use
fragranced panty liners, tampons, toilet paper or
feminine sprays
How are
pregnant women treated for yeast
infection:
You can consult your
doctor to discuss the best form of treatment for you. When
you are pregnant, do not use Diflucan ( an oral, single dose
medication for yeast infections) because it is not proven
safe for use during pregnancy and lactation .
A common prescribed
drug for use during pregnancy is Miconazole cream, an
anti-fungus drug. Miconazole cream is applied on the labia
and around the vaginal opening.
It can also be used
as a suppository overnight. The cream neutralizes the yeast
and Anti-fungus drugs can have certain side effects,
however, including:
·
feeling
dizzy
·
headaches,
vomiting
·
depression,
diarrhea and seizures.
Also, many women find that
Miconazole cream does not clear up the symptoms at all, and
the yeast infection worsens to extremely painful levels.
Many people opt out
of using drugs during pregnancy and chose a natural cure to
protect the baby and have a treatment method ready to go for
any recurring infection.
Medical blogs and
forums often refer women to try a natural cure if the
doctor’s prescription doesn’t work for them.
One natural method
is to use a starch-free (sugar-free) powder on the labia and
vaginal area to keep it dry. By stopping the moist, warm
environment the yeast can’t thrive and your rash will heal
more quickly.
