Yeast is a naturally ocurring fungus is present in all
people including babies. However, infant thrush yeast
infection can severely affect infants.
The fungus candida can occur in the throat and esophagus.
This condition is candida esophagitis or Esophageal
Candidiasis. Oral yeast infection can lead to these conditions
if not treated properly.
Oral yeast infection can affect babies that are breast
feeding or bottle feeding.
When the fungus grows out of control, it causes thrush that
affects the inner cheeks, toungue, throat and esophagus.
Symptoms include white spongy sores in the mouth, sore
throat and swelling of the throat and esophagus.
Problems with swallowing or painful swallowing can
occur.
Those susceptible to Oral Yeast Infection are:
- newborns
- people who wear dentures
- people who use inhaled corticosteroids
Newborn's mouths are at risk of overgrowth of the fungus
because it is a warm, moist environment where thrush can
grow.
The common side affects are white spongy sores, or a
darkened patch on the toungue.
The overgrowth of the candida fungus can occur from
unsterilized nipples, or from unhygienic bottles.
The baby is in contact with yeast at the time of birth,
through the birth canal. Thrush yeast infection is common
but treatable.

Hormonal changes after birth and within the first two months
can trigger an overgrowth of yeast in the mouth.
Antibiotics taken by the mother can cause a trigger of
thrush. The antibiotics pass through the milk , where they are
passed off to the baby.
Thus, the antibiotics affect the microorganisms in the baby
and can weaken immunity to candida or thrush. If you are
breastfeeding and your baby has thrush, they can pass it on to
you in the form of a painful yeast infection in the nipples,
causing swelling and pain.
Symptoms of thrush yeast infection in the babies mouths
may include the spongy white sores which may bleed.
White patches on the toungue, pain when breastfeeding or
sucking on a pacifier or bottle, or general mouth
discomfort.
Babies even when hungry will avoid eating because of the
discomfort of thrush yeast infection. Its difficult to
watch an infant struggling to nurse, and can be worrying.
