What are the causes of thrush:
Common causes can include everything from certain medication
to poor daily oral hygiene. Common causes are:
- Recent illness- the normal bacteria balance in the
body is disrupted
- Stress
- Introduction of microorganisms- bacteria from
non-sterile bottles or bottle nipples
- Birth control pills
- Antibiotics
- Use of corticosteroids
- Hormonal changes during pregnancy
- Diabetes
- Weakened immune system due to cancer or HIV
- Conditions like dry mouth
Symptoms of thrush include spongy, whitish sores in the
mouth that look like cottage cheese. The sores develop on the
inner cheeks or tongue. Painful reddened areas underneath the
sores can spread over the mouth. When the sores are scraped
away, bleeding will occur. Also, pain when eating or brushing
your teeth is common.
How is thrush diagnosed?
Thrush is diagnosed by a dentist or doctor during an oral
exam. The doctor will swab the area with a long Q-tip, then
analyze it under a microscope or send it to a lab for a culture
test.

In rarer cases, the thrush will spread to the esophagus and
even the digestive tract. Lesions that occur in these areas
cause a feeling of pain when swallowing, pressure in the throat
and in the chest and often a fever.
Doctors will often prescribe an anti-fungal medication to be
taken orally. The Prescription is taken for 10-14 days in
liquids, tablets or other forms.
An endoscopy of the stomach or esophagus would be necessary
for advanced cases of oral thrush.
